Digital Success – My Story

Back in the early 2000’s I was looking for a means to use the internet to make some extra money. I was juggling a number of jobs while building a career as a stunt performer (see my about me page for more on this).

I joined a number of online courses which eventually led me to a business model known as affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing you don’t need any products of your own; you can promote other people’s products online and get paid a commission based on the sale.

After taking a number of courses which I detail in my digital profit course review, I was still no further with my digital success plans. I was about to ditch the idea of selling products online when I found a video of a guy on a pedalo, talking about his online business.

I bit the bullet and bought his course but after years of struggling online I was pretty sceptical. I was surprised to be able to meet both the founders of the company Stuart Ross and Jay Kubassek at one of their meetings in London.

Digital Success Mentors – The SFM

The SFM Mentors are digital success mentors who showed me, and many others, how to build an online business from scratch. I was able to meet both Stuart and Jay but also many other members of this online business community.

Not all affiliate programs are equal though. For example, digital products tend to pay much larger commissions than physical products. Typically, physical products pay 3-10% commissions to affiliates whereas digital products can pay 40-50% commissions.

That’s because physical products carry more costs including postage, manufacturing and handling costs. Digital products don’t have such high costs so they can pass the savings on the affiliates who promote them.

What’s Involved In An Online Business?

An online business can be built from anywhere using a sales funnel, digital products and a marketing ‘engine’. With the right kind of products, you can earn considerably more than with the ‘wrong’ kinds of products, too.

As you can see in the video (click image above), much of the technical aspect of building these systems has been removed. This makes a ‘startup online business’ much more accessible to anyone, even without any experience.

There’s still things to learn though, even after setting up the fundamental systems which will help you sell products over the internet. The main focus once you’ve done that is marketing your sales funnel. Marketing can be done in a variety of ways including both content marketing and paid marketing strategies.

My journey with affiliate marketing started over 10 years ago. I jumped from one ‘system’ to another, frantic to make some money from the internet. • 9 to 5 thinking teaches us that despite our productivity we still get paid. With affiliate marketing it’s different. You need to be productive or you won’t get paid. Old habits can hinder our progress and we need to start thinking like an entrepreneur, not a ‘technician’. Work on yourself and on your business, don’t get caught up working ‘in’ your business.
• Growth is aways limited by your thinking – that’s why you need a mentor. You can’t see what you don’t know; a mentor can!
