Online marketing success can take many forms. A successful online marketing strategy will help you build website traffic, leads and customers. But how do you go about building online marketing success, and where do you start?

A successful marketing strategy can involve a number of different marketing methods:

  1. Adwords search traffic targeted at your main keywords
  2. YouTube organic marketing – building content for YouTube
  3. A free Google local business listing
  4. Blogging – creating written content targeted at your potential customers
  5. Niche website creation – building smaller satellite websites targeted at specific keywords
  6. Social media organic traffic can be built up on any of the many social media sites available – Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook, YouTube etc.

But where do you start?

If you have a physical business you should definitely have a website already and use a Google Places listing. Google My Business, formally Google Places offers a free listing for physical businesses.

It takes only a short time to set up an account and get your listing live using Google My Business. You’ll have to confirm your address and you’ll usually receive something in the post with a code on it to verify your listing is genuine.

Next start with paid marketing. For only small amounts you can target specific search queries using Google Adwords which relate to your business. You can also use Bing (now Microsoft advertising) which has a similar platform to Google and of course Yahoo.

With paid marketing platforms you can set a small daily budget while you get used to the platform. Again, target specific keywords which relate to your business. You can use Google’s keyword planner to find them.

Type your “seed keyword” into the planner and you’ll see the search terms which are already being searched for on Google.

You can also use data from the keyword planner to find long tail keywords within your business niche. Then, create content for the ones which offer the least competition.

You can check for keyword competition by doing a normal search on Google using a desktop device. You should see a number come up for the number of competing websites for the particular phrase you’re using.

The lower this number, the less competition there will be for your specific keyword.

You can use a similar strategy to get traffic back to your website using YouTube – both organically and using paid marketing. Find longer tail keywords which are already being searched for on YouTube by typing your seed keyword into the search bar on YouTube.

Then take the keywords which offer the least competition; these are usually the longer ones. Create videos and tag them with your chosen keywords. Then, link back from videos to your website. If you stick at this strategy for some time, and keep creating useful videos targeted at your audience, you should see some steady growth in traffic.

Building Niche Websites

A niche website is basically the same kind of tactic as the blogging and YouTube. Only with a niche website, you build the website around your main keywords and attempt to get it ranking on Google, and other search engines.

With the right niche, and by building some quality content to help your visitors with something, you can get some traction using this method. I have several niche websites which get traffic from Google and other search engines.

Or course much like the organic YouTube strategy and the blogging method, this is a “slow burner”. You need to stick at it for months before you’ll see regular traffic from these methods. If you want things to happen more quickly, you’ll need to use paid marketing.
