When I started building my own martial arts school, I had 20 years of experience as a martial arts student. This worked against me. I had zero experience as an owner. So I worked hard in the ways I always had – training hard. Unfortunately this doesn’t translate to building a business effectively.
You still need to work hard on building a business, but you also need to work hard on the right activities. Just working hard is what a good employee does. It doesn’t help a good entrepreneur though. Entrepreneurs need to see the bigger picture and work at those actions which will make the most difference to their business. If you’ve transitioned from an employee to a business owner, there’s many problems which you might bring to your business, just from your experience of working hard previously.

As an employee, I worked hard trying to impress the boss and get away with as much as possible. I’m a good employee, apart from I wasn’t motivated to work for someone else. As a business owner, if you don’t work at the right actions, your business will fail. You won’t get paid so there’s a lot more at stake!
Owners need to drive their business forwards with marketing. Employees just need to work as technicians in their job roles, to bring home a wage every month.
When you switch from being an employee to a business owner, you can get stuck in the role of employee – working hard at those actions which have the least impact on your business. Because they worked at an employee level, you repeat those same actions as a business owner, but they don’t work! This is what happens when you get stuck in employee mode – working as a technician in the role of an owner.
